Walter James Turner, Retired Lt. Col, 82, passed away October 1, 2013 at the Alaska Veterans and Pioneer Home in Palmer. Jim was born December 2, 1930 in Ironton, Missouri to Frances and Andrew Turner. Jim graduated from Ironton High School in 1948, received his BA from the University of Missouri in 1954, received a MBA from Syracuse University in 1962 and was a member of PHI DELTA THETA Fraternity. It was Syracuse where he met and married his beloved wife Carolyn. Jim served in the United States Air Force for 25 years from 1954 until 1978. Some of his most memorable assignments were serving as a General's Aid at Dreux Air Base in France, flying as a personal pilot for the President of the Belgian Congo and ROTC commander at Sul Ross University in Texas. In the Vietnam War he was awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross. Jims' last assignment was at Elmendorf Air Force Base where he was the Commander of the Supply and Acquisition Squadron. Upon retirement from the USAF Jim was employed as an Administrative Assistant for the Municipality of Anchorage in the Personnel and Public Works Department. He retired from the Municipality in 1992. Jim's first priority was spending time with all of his family. He loved sharing his stories and his skills with his family and friends. Jim loved telling a good joke and would share them with anyone that would listen. Jim loved skiing, tennis and watching old westerns. In the later part of his life he traveled with friends and family. Jim was preceded in death by his two brothers, Robert and Donald Turner. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Carolyn Turner; his daughters, Shelby Weaver and Kimberley Aikey, his sons, James, Walter, and David Turner; his step- sister, Judy Dewitt and his step- mother, Esther Turner. He is also survived by his ten grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Services will be held Friday, October 11th at Kehl's Legacy Funeral Home, 11621 Old Seward Highway in Anchorage. Visitation is from 5-6 p.m. A memorial service will begin at 6 p.m. On Tuesday, October 15th, at 2:30 p.m. there will be a military burial at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery.
