Robert Lee Hirt, World War II Veteran, of Houston, having reached the age of 99, passed away Wednesday, March, 22, 2017. Graveside services will military honors will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale with Dr. Michael T. Dunn of First Christian Church of Houston officiating. Visitation will be held prior to services from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home.

Mr. Hirt was born September 17, 1917 in Rockdale, Texas to W.C. and Luella (Middleton) Hirt. He attended public schools in Rockdale and Thorndale. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he spent the next four years. While stationed in Victoria, Texas he married Josephine Murphree of Rockdale. After a brief interim, he reenlisted in 1948 and together they traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States. He retired with 22 years of active service with the rank of Master Sergeant E7 and was Honorably Discharged in 1965. Mr. Hirt then went to work for Rice University with the Administrative Staff and retired in 1985.

He was very active in fishing, hunting, golf and loved ping pong. Mr. Hirt was a member of the First Christian Church in Houston for many years. He was a 32nd degree Free Mason in The Scottish Rite for 55 years as well as a member of Ransford Chapter #135 Order of the Eastern Star.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Josephine Hirt; parents, W.C. and Luella Hirt; brother, J.C. “Sonny” Hirt; and sister, Mabel Simank.

Mr. Hirt is survived by his daughters, Jane Hirt McKinley and husband Clark of Bellville, Texas and Susan Hirt Dyes of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Jennifer Hirt McKinley, Aaron Bennett Brown, Amy Elizabeth Dyes and Robert Scott Hirt Dyes; great grandchildren, Kendal Bennett Brown and Josephine Faye Brown; several nieces and nephews; as well as his faithful companion, Fiona.

Pallbearers will be Tom Hatcher, Billy Rodenbeck, Wayne Slivinsky, Johnny Hirt, Gordon Samuelson, Clark McKinley, Robert Scott Hirt Dyes and Aaron Bennett Brown.

Honorary pallbearers are Bud Rainey, Jim Berry and Grayson Moss.
